DBSTC Rector’s Cup
Last 2nd Aug 2019 Don Bosco Simbu Technical College, Kumgi in Simbu Province opened its sports fest with a bang. It is called the Rector’s Cup. In Don Bosco’s educational system sports, music and other cultural presentations together with religious activities and formation are important elements which foster the student’s integral formation
PGS novices
Thomas Warwara and Joshua Tarere have started their noviciate with 10 other novices from 5 countries at the international Salesian noviciate at Lawaan, Cebu, Philippines. Thomas comes from Utmei, ENB. After his secondary studies at Utmei secondary school, he enrolled at DBTI, Boroko East. As a DBTI student he joined the Salesian aspirantate. new PGS Provincial Economer appointed
Rector Major appoints new PGS Provincial Economer July 16, 2019 – Fr. Angel Fernandez Artime, Rector Major has appointed Fr. Srimal Priyanga Gajasinhage as Provincial Economer of the Vice-Province of Blessed Philip Rinaldi (PGS) from January 2020-December 2022. Fr. Srimal was born in Negombo, Sri Lanka. As a young Salesian he applied to be a missionary and was sent to the Solomon Islands as a practical trainee. He studied theology at the Salesian Pontifical University, Rome where he also obtained his Licentiate in Youth Ministry. Since 2017 he is the Rector of DBTI Henderson, Solomon Islands
Salesian Family Retreat 2019
Fr. Joe Boenzi SDB, director of Institute of Salesian Studies at Berkeley, USA, preached the Salesian Family retreat at Emmaus Retreat and Conference Centre, Boroko East last June 30 to July 6. This was followed by the Salesian Rectors’ retreat on July 7-13. In his talks Fr. Boenzi helped everyone drink from the spiritual spring ofDon Bosco and St. Francis de Sales.
Perpetual Profession
Br. Peter Nguyen Hoai Van made his perpetual profession last July 6, 2019 in the Archdiocesan Shrine of Mary Help of Christians, Boroko East, PNG during the 5.00 pm eucharistic celebration presided by Fr. Alfred Maravilla SDB, Provincial. Br. Peter is from Vietnam. After his postnovitiate formation he applied to be a missionary and was sent to PGS Vice-Province in 2014. He did his practical training in Henderson, SI as well as in Rapolo (PNG). At present he is doing his second year of theology in Don Bosco Center of Studies, Parañaque, Philippines.
Second Melanesian Salesians’ Encounter
Last 7-9 July 2019 the 10 Melanesian Salesians of the PGS Vice-Province gathered together in the Provincial house for their annual encounter. During this encounter the participants recognised that they are the emerging Melanesian face of Don Bosco. To make Don Bosco’s charism take deeper root they committed themselves to know better their cultural traditions, live the Salesian constitutions and the Preventive System of education.. They also drew up the emerging profile of the Melanesian Salesian.
Skills training for out-of-school youth
Skills training for out-of-school youth Gabutu – Since 2001 Don Bosco Technical School offers the 40 weeks Employment Oriented Skills Development Training (EOSDT) course in electrical technology, motor mechanic, computer skills and office administration for out of school youth from Term 3 to Term 4. This year 20 West Papuan teenagers are among the many out-of-school youth who have enrolled to the course through the support of Caritas PNG. For 18 years now DBTS has trained countless out-of-school youth which enabled them to find gainful employment.
itinerant study-retreat in Salesian Holy Places
Colle Don Bosco – from June 18-28, 2019 five Papua New Guinean Salesians are presently visiting the places connected with Don Bosco to help them better understand the Salesian charism. Guided by the PGS Provincial with the logistical support of Br José Trigona the group read and reflect on primary Salesian sources ‘on site’ to better appreciate their importance for Salesian life and activity in Melanesia today.
